I've been working with children and families for 25 years. To this work I always brings with me endless patience, a deep empathy, and an ability to view the world through the eyes of a child. I am committed to supporting the growth and empowerment of children by helping them discover and effectively use their own unique abilities and attributes.
As a music specialist, I've worked with children with various neuro developmental difficulties.
This work was especially rewarding, and I returned to tertiary study to learn more about this vulnerable population. I completed a Bachelor of Science degree (Hons) with a focus on the music and the mind, then completed a Graduate Diploma of Psychology, a Master of Developmental and Educational Psychology and a Doctorate of Philosophy.
My PhD researched links between musical skills (especially rhythmic skills) and academic learning. I spent 5 years as a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Western Australia and the University of Notre Dame examining family focused interventions for children with dyslexia and the neural basis of motor system disorders.
Throughout my research career, I have sought a deeper understanding of the issues underlying normal and abnormal child development using this knowledge as a foundation to improve the wellbeing of children and their families.
Although I am still holding research positions at both UWA the University of Notre Dame, working directly with children/families to improve their overall wellbeing is my true joy. I am the director of ‘Nurturing Mindz” a private psychological practice providing services for children and their families.
I have received specialist training in evidence-based interventions specifically designed for young children (Child Centred Play Therapy) and Adolescents (CBT, music/rhythmic therapy). I continue to undertake professional development focusing on methods to improve child and family wellbeing. I am a member of the following associations and is bound by their codes of ethical practice:
